Donwood Community Aged Care Services Inc. (“Donwood”) operates a 90 bed residential aged care facility at 1-5 Mount Dandenong Road, Croydon, Victoria with a frontage also at 17 Diana Street, Croydon. Donwood also operates six independent living units at 19-21 Diana Street, Croydon. Donwood commenced in 1991 as a new thirty bed purpose build high care nursing home fronting Mount Dandenong Road Croydon. Today that thirty bed area operates around three “communities” or cluster of rooms. The communities are named ‘Bluebell’, ‘Rose’ and ‘Primrose’.
‘Bluebell’ consists of eight rooms all with ensuite bathrooms. Of these rooms, four are single rooms and four are double, i.e. shared, rooms. Single room sizes range from 13.2 square metres to 14.4 square metres plus in each case the ensuite bathroom of about 4.0 square metres. Double room sizes range from 22.8 square metres to 26.9 square metres plus in each case the ensuite bathroom of about 4.0 square metres.
‘Rose’ consists of six rooms all with ensuite bathrooms. Of these rooms, three are single rooms and three are double, i.e. shared, rooms. Single room sizes range from 13.3 square metres to 13.6 square metres plus in each case the ensuite bathroom is about 4.0 square metres. Double room sizes range from 25.2 square metres to 30.0 square metres plus in each case the ensuite bathroom of about 4.2 square metres.
‘Primrose’ consists of six rooms all with ensuite bathrooms. Of these rooms, three are single rooms and three are double, i.e. shared, rooms. Single room sizes range from 14.8 square metres to 19.8 square metres plus in each case the ensuite bathroom of about 4.2 square metres. Double room sizes range from 24.5 square metres to 37.88 square metres plus in each case the ensuite bathroom of about 4.2 square metres.
The Donwood Nursing Home therefore caters for thirty residents, ten of whom enjoy single rooms and twenty of whom enjoy double, or shared, rooms.
One single room is specifically set aside exclusively for respite care.
Each room has an external window to a landscaped garden or courtyard. There are three lounge areas for residents and their families to enjoy. The nursing home has its own wheelchair friendly dining room, adjoining the full commercial kitchen.
A Community Day Centre and Physiotherapy Clinic as well as reception, office and administrative offices compliment the nursing home.
Residents’ rooms are of high quality with regular repainting, recarpeting, and renewal of curtains and upgrading of ensuite bathrooms having been undertaken. All ensuite bathrooms comprise a lipless, easy access shower, hand basin and disabled toilet.
The three lounge areas have sizes ranging from 32 square metres to 36 square metres and are tastefully furnished with carpets & drapes. Air-conditioning is ducted through the lounge, dining room and passages of the Nursing Home.
Donwood expanded in 1998 and again in 2004 with the opening of a new purpose built “Low Care” residential facility fronting Diana Street Croydon and known as Diana Street Lodge. Diana Street Lodge caters for sixty residents, each in single rooms with ensuite bathrooms, centred around three “communities” – ‘Acacia’, ‘Banksia’ and ‘Callistemon’.
Today in Diana Street Lodge, ‘Acacia’ is a secure, Dementia Specific (memory support) community of thirty single rooms, each with ensuite bathrooms, with rooms ranging from 14.72 square metres to 19.92 square metres, plus ensuite bathrooms generally of about 4.0 or 5.0 square metres. One room is set aside for respite care. Residents in ‘Acacia’ enjoy their own lounge and dining area and have their own private access to external areas of open space, walkways and outdoor seating.
‘Banksia’ consists of eighteen single rooms of 14.72 square metres. Each room has its own ensuite bathroom generally of about 4.0 square metres.
‘Callistemon’ consists of eleven single rooms of 14.72 square metres. Each room has its own ensuite bathroom generally of about 4.0 square metres.
There is a further room in Diana Street Lodge specifically set aside for respite care.
Each room in Banksia and Callistemon opens to a central living area with additional areas for tea and coffee preparation and a myriad of nooks and crannies for private contemplation. The large central dining room located between Banksia and Callistemon enjoys a particularly light and open outlook. Our activities area extends from the dining area. Our lifestyle staff offer a wide range of activities to cater for our residents.
Visitors to Diana Street Lodge frequently remark favourably on how light and airy the facility is, with its soaring ceiling, light timber panelled walls, extensive floor to ceiling windows and other architecturally designed features.
The dominant feature of Diana Street Lodge is the open planned dining and activity areas of some 184 square metres of accessible daily living space.
In summary, throughout the entire Donwood Community Aged Care Services facilities, all 70 single rooms and 10 double i.e shared rooms, have ensuite bathrooms, heating, air conditioning to common areas and fire sprinkler services.
With the advent of changes to Aged Care practices following the implementation of Living Longer Living Better reforms during 2014 there will no longer be a distinction between low care and high care. Consequently residents will be able to be accommodated throughout the entire facility, whilst Acacia will remain a Memory Support area.
Of course there is a lot more to consider when choosing between aged care facilities than merely cost and room sizes. The critical point of difference which Donwood Community Aged Care Services Inc. offers is the quality of care provided, and the supportive community based environment it enjoys.
Come and visit Donwood – we are sure you will see and feel what we mean.
In the interests of the health and safety of the residents and staff Donwood Aged Care Facility has a non-smoking policy. There is STRICTLY NO SMOKING IN THE BUILDING OR ON THE GROUNDS.
